what do you usually get at Philz?
and why... do you change it up or stick with the same thing?

I get the ether usually. I have tried the ashley special, and the philharmonic the other day, but the ether always knocks me down. that first sip....

Warmed to Sugar

The first time I went to Phil's, I bucked the system, and said no to the spoonful of brown sugar aimed at my tesora. For shame! Luckily, I have a sweet-toothed partner who'd already tried Phil's tesora and who frowned a lot until I took a sip of his coffee. Long story short, I have gone according to Phil's tesora recipe ever since.

I am still a black coffee woman elsewhere; Phil's simply warms me up to the sweet stuff. It helps that I usually arrive in the late afternoon -- if I get there at the start of a long day of creative work (I am a writer) I order an ether.

I get the Turkish blend with cardamom. Damn good. So far that's all I've tried. Maybe next time I'll try something different...I think.

If you like Philz like I like Philz then you should come join our myspace group, "Phrendz of Philz" and upload pictures, post bulletins about events at Philz, or just to meet and chat with people that have the same obsession... a great cup of coffee!

tesora

Tesora is what I was given the first time I visited Philz, the new one on 18th at Sanchez. I take it with milk, so I'm not a 'purist', but no sugar. It's the prefect strength for me (kinda strong without being bitter or burned). Plus is has just a little bit of 'grit', which I assume comes from a very fine grind. BTW also tried Turkish and like it, but I get pretty buzzed on it so it's a once-in-awhile treat. I'm not about to try anything else -- why would I, this one is perfect for me.

Its the best coffee I have had in all my years living in SF. Its like smooth fine wine; no bitterness, doesn't have a 'burnt' taste to it.

Tesora is my favorite, but sometimes I like Julies', have not tried the turkish yet. Phil really tries to make the best coffee and I honor him for that by spending time at his shop. I also like Phil, as a friend.

Lots of cream, a little sugar, a grain of cardamon, and the famous sprig of mint, and there you have a recipe for magical coffee. See you soon, Phil!

...yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy.
Yummy.
Haven't had a cup that wasn't bee-u-tee-ful! I like mine with the works, but especially the Turkish.
I usually ask the person making my delightful drink to give me what they like best, if the place is not too busy. Different people working, different coffee. A bit like playing the Wheel of Fortune, except I always win.

I agree with what a few other people on here said. The tesora with cream/no sugar is pretty much a masterpiece.
Thanks Philz.

I just wanted to thank you to the amazing staff at Philz in the Castro. I was recently on holidays from Australia and staying in the Castro. I was there to visit my ex whom I had not seen for nearly a year, so it was quite an emotional time for me to be in San Fran. By far the best part of my day (every day) was getting a Jacobs blend at Philz coffee. You guys have no idea how much I loved it and how nice it was to just sit and chill out!! I just wanted to say thanks and you guys and the coffee rock! Jayne
